Important facts about measles from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH)

Dear CPS Parent or Guardian,

As you may be aware, cases of measles have recently been reported in more than a dozen states, including Illinois. Parents are required to show proof that their child is vaccinated prior to enrolling them in a CPS school, however we still want to provide you with information to help ensure the health of your family.

Below are some important facts about measles from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH):

  • Measles is a serious respiratory infection that can be dangerous to children.
  • Symptoms include a high fever and a rash of tiny red spots that spreads from the head to the rest of the body.
  • Measles is spread when infected people breathe, sneeze or cough. It is extremely contagious.
  • The best way to protect against measles is to get the measles vaccine.

If you or your child has not been vaccinated for measles, I strongly encourage you to contact your healthcare provider to get the vaccine. You can also call 3-1-1 to find a CDPH clinic where the measles vaccine is offered free of charge.

CPS will continue working with the CDPH on best practices for preventing the outbreak of measles in our schools. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Student Health and Wellness at (773) 553-3560.
