PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
Thank you for another fantastic week–the students have settled into daily routines and procedures, and teaching and learning is underway in all of our classrooms! We are pleased to welcome the newest addition to our Blaine family–congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Russell on the arrival of their new baby girl!
We look forward to welcoming all Blaine families to our annual Open House this Thursday, September 20th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to visit classrooms and learn more about curriculum, instruction and upcoming special events.
When you visit, please be sure to stop by the Blaine Library Lab, and see the newly painted hallways, Lunch Room and Auditorium.  We are excited to share these recent capital improvements and programming enhancements with our community. We would like to extend a special thanks to Friends of Blaine, the Chicago Cubs and City Year for their continuous support and investment in our school.
We look forward to seeing you Thursday, and hope you have a great week!
Sincerely,
Ms. Brito
STUDENT FEES DUE BY SEPTEMBER 30TH
One week in!  Thank you to those who have already paid their student fees. Did you know that each year we rely on mandatory student fees to cover critical needs at Blaine? From the latest curriculum and much needed supplies to sports programs and critical recess supervision –student fees support our entire student body throughout the year.
There are 3 convenient ways to pay:
1. Click here to pay online by selecting the Student Fees to pay the $250.
2. Visit the Student Fees table at the Open House on September 20th from 6:00 to 7:00 to pay by credit card or drop off your check.
3. Submit your check (payable to James G. Blaine Elementary) to the main office along with the student fee form found on the Blaine website.

Your $250 per student tax-deductible payment is due no later than September 30th.

Remember, payment of fees will be a prerequisite for participation in most non-classroom programming. For additional information, including exemptions and waivers, please see below and visit this Student Fees Page on the Blaine website.

Thank you,
Your Local School Council

*Waivers/Payment Plans – All CPS families must complete a Family Income Information Form (FIIF) which will be distributed during the first week of school. If you are unable to afford the fee, completion of this form is the first step toward receiving a waiver. Under certain circumstances we are able to offer a payment plan, please contact the main office to discuss possible options.

*Exemptions/Fee Coverage – If you are contributing the full $1,400 ask to the KFund, you will not be expected to pay this student fee for your kindergartener. Fees paid for 8th grade students will cover the $70 graduation expense typically passed along to parents later in the year.

BLAINE FIELD UPDATE
Progress on the Blaine field is underway!  The process of installing the turf is almost complete; lines and logos will be added later this week.  After the turf is installed, CPS will complete the required testing to ensure the field is safe for students.  We will provide you with additional updates as they come available, and appreciate your patience and flexibility!
AFTER SCHOOL MUSIC LESSON REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
If you are interested in having your child learn to play an instrument you will need to sign the attached letter of support and return it to your child’s teacher or Mr. McGeehan as soon as possible. After school lessons Monday, September 24th, 2018. Please reach out to Mr. McGeehan via email at ctmcgeehan@cps.edu regarding questions.

The fee for lessons is $250 per SEMESTER. Payment for lessons can be submitted online by visiting the Blaine School website and clicking ONLINE PAYMENTS on the left-hand column, followed by AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. The direct link is: https://www.epayillinois.com/Home/ShowSiteLandingPage/5268

JOIN US FOR THE PTA MEETING ON THURS, SEPT 20TH!
Please join us for coffee and our first PTA meeting of the school year on Thursday, September 20th at 8:15am in the auditorium. We will discuss our upcoming events, volunteer opportunities and our budget for the year. You do not need to be a PTA member to attend. We look forward to seeing you there!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Parent volunteers play an important role at Blaine and contribute to our ongoing success.  We encourage parents to continue their support of our school by being an active participant in their child’s education and safety and we thank those parents who regularly volunteer. We absolutely need parent support through volunteering to maintain the experience that Blaine students have become accustomed to – and deserve.

In order to be considered as a Blaine volunteer, parents must complete the on-line application and in most cases, submit to a TB test and background check through fingerprinting.  The process takes a couple of weeks but helps ensure that all adults who interact with students have been held to the highest level of scrutiny, providing safety and security for all.

Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year.  Right now, we especially need help in the following areas:

Kiss & Go / Parent Patrol

7:40-8:05am – Assistance is needed every day that school is in session

For more information or to sign up please email teolsen@cps.edu

Lunchroom/ Recess Assistance

10:15-12:15pm – Assistance is needed every day that school is in session.

For more information or to sign up please email teolsen@cps.edu

Classroom Assistance

Varies – Room Parents and Teachers determine based on current class needs.

For more information or to sign up please contact your child’s teacher or Room Parent.

With Walk-A-Thon, Blaine Flix, and the Book Fair all coming up within the next thirty days, there will be many more opportunities to help. Please consider volunteering this year.  Your help makes a world of difference.

 SAY CHEESE

It’s almost time for school pictures!

On October 4th, Pollack Photography will be returning to Blaine for this year’s school pictures. Preschool through seventh grade photos will be taken during the school day. Be sure to send your students in picture-appropriate clothing.  No money is needed on picture day – when proofs are available they can be ordered on-line.  All Blaine students (Pre-K – 7) will be photographed.  Additional information (including pricing) is in the flyer to be sent home this week.  Note: Eighth grade graduation photos will be taken in the spring.

 SAFETY REMINDERS

We are fortunate to have our Crossing Guard, Joanne, at the corner of Southport and Grace each morning and afternoon. Please honor her important responsibilities of keeping our students and families safe by respecting her directions when crossing the street.  As a reminder, bikes and scooters should be walked across the street. We would also like to remind all of our families that “No Turn on Red” signs have been placed at the corner of Grace and Southport. Additionally, arrows indicate corresponding turning lanes. Please be mindful of the new safety procedures at this intersection.  Finally, our wonderful Kiss-n-Go volunteers support our entry procedures by helping every student get to school safely and on time. We ask that you be respectful and cooperative of their directions to ensure morning smooth transitions.
