Q: What are the Blaine School hours?

A: Our school day is from 8:00-3:00 for K-8th. Students may enter the school building at 7:30 a.m.

Q: What is Kiss-N-Go?

A: Kiss N’ Go is a parent volunteer-supervised service allowing parents of students Grade K-8 to drop off their children curb-side on Grace St. from 7:35 until 2nd bell @ 8am. Traveling east on Grace, parents will be able to drop off their children in the Kiss N’ Go lane located on the north side of Grace between Janssen and Southport. The children will then proceed to their designated waiting areas; Kindergarten in the Playlot on Grace and grades 1-8 on the Blaine Soccer Field…both weather permitting. (If rain or temperatures below 40 are present, kids will directly enter the Main Door on Grace)  Our primary concern is the safety of the children. With everyone’s cooperation this plan should work smoothly.

Also, please do not park on Grace Street. You will be ticketed. This area needs to be free of cars due to the number of children entering the school.  Kindergarten parents or parents who do not wish to use the Kiss n Go service, please park on Southport and walk to Blaine.

Important Kiss N’ Go reminders:

  • PLEASE PULL ALL THE WAY FORWARD – There are nearly 900 students at Blaine. We must be organized and take all students needs into account equally for this service to work safely.
  • NO DOUBLE PARKING AT ANY TIME AND DO NOT BLOCK ANY CROSS WALKS.
  • DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR ENGINE in the Kiss N’ Go lane. This slows down traffic flow.
  • DO NOT TALK ON CELL PHONES in the Kiss N’ Go lane. We need your full attention while dropping of and exiting the lane.
  • PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILDREN EXIT THE CAR ON THE SIDEWALK SIDE. DO NOT LET THEM EXIT ONTO THE STREET.
  • HAVE BACKPACKS ready to exit vehicle versus storing in your trunk. DO NOT EXIT VEHICLE TO UNLOAD BACKPACKS.
  • DO NOT PARK, TURN AROUND OR DROP OFF YOUR CHILDREN IN SOUTHPORT SCHOOL PARKING LOT. It causes too many traffic difficulties and there have been frequent incidents of damage to parked vehicles.
  • PLEASE MAKE EYE CONTACT. THE VOLUNTEERS CANNOT SEE THROUGH TINTED WINDOWS AND NEED YOU TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM.

Q: How do I register my child for preschool?

Q: What is the dress code policy?

A: As a public elementary school, it is our responsibility to ensure that students obtain the knowledge, skills and habits needed to navigate our world successfully, while also respecting the right to express both individuality and creativity. This responsibility includes familiarizing students with the standards of appropriate dress in different contexts (e.g., formal, professional, business casual, and casual dress), and getting them accustomed to meeting such standards. Please see the 2016-2017 dress code requirements below, and note that they have been modified from the previous school year. The most notable changes include the length of shorts, skirts and dresses and the inclusion of leggings. This language comes as a result of reviewing multiple elementary and high school policies, and from community feedback provided by students, parents and staff. It is our goal to ensure that all students feel comfortable, safe and respected at Blaine, and modifications to the dress code were made in an attempt to support this goal.

Blaine staff members will exercise judgment and decisions regarding dress code violations. Students who are deemed not in compliance with the dress code will be required to either a) call home to request other clothing, b) wear a sweatshirt or sweater, or c) wear alternative clothing provided by the office. Dress code requirements may be relaxed at staff discretion for student performances, sports, special events and/or other activities.

Dress Code

Students may wear a variety of colors and styles so long as they adhere to the following criteria:

 

  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses must cover your bottom when sitting and/or standing.
  • Spaghetti straps or halter top dresses and shirts are not allowed in middle school grades (5-8) unless worn under a cardigan or jacket.
  • Underclothing must not be visible. Clothing must cover the stomach and back, even when stretching.
  • Cotton/sheer leggings may be worn in all grades. Middle school students must wear a top, dress, skirt or shorts of an appropriate length (covers the seat area).Yoga/running pants are allowed in all grades with any top that meets dress code guidelines.
  • Clothing and footwear must not present a safety hazard to the wearer or to others. Students should use discretion when wearing high heels or flip flops during planned outdoor activities. Shoes with wheels (ie. Heeley’s) are not permitted.
  • The following are not permitted:
    • Hoods or hats worn indoors (hooded sweatshirts are permitted indoors with hoods down)
    • Mesh or see-through clothing
    • Clothing with inappropriate language or designs (e.g., symbols, pictures or messages that promote illegal substances, convey information that is distasteful, harassing, obscene, or gang-related), or writing on the seat area of pants
  • As a courtesy to those with allergies or asthma, refrain from wearing excessive perfume, cologne, or body spray.

Dress code requirements may be relaxed at staff discretion for student performances, sports and other activities.

Please note that in cases of students violating these policies, we will contact you so that you can bring the proper uniform attire that day.  Our most important goal is to provide a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment. As always, your cooperation and support is needed to contribute to the establishment of a positive learning atmosphere for everyone.

Q: Do you have recess?

A: Yes. Students have recess every day. Weather permitting, it is held outside.

Q: What is your visitor policy?

A: All parents visiting the school can use the main entrance (off of Grace, to the right of Door 1). Please sign in at the security desk and get a visitor badge. Classes may not be interrupted during the school day.

Q: How do I make an appointment to meet with my child’s teacher?

A: Please arrange a meeting in advance, by emailing your child’s teacher.  Notes for teachers may also be left in their mailbox located in the main office.  Please address any concerns directly with your child’s teacher prior to requesting administration engagement. Q: What is the nut allergy policy?

A: Blaine is a PEANUT free school.  To protect our students with peanut allergies, please do not send your children to school with any items containing peanuts.  If your child has allergies/asthma/diabetes, please see the following information about obtaining a 504 Plan:  http://www.cpsdiverselearner.org.

Q: What is the absent/tardy policy of the school?

A: Regular attendance is a vital factor for success at school. The academic curriculum is sufficiently difficult that a student cannot afford to miss classroom instruction and meet grade level expectations for promotion. Students with more than 9 days of unexcused absence may be retained in June. School personnel closely monitor student attendance. Parents will be notified if their child’s attendance is problematic or leading toward a truancy case. Parents are asked to call Blaine School whenever their child will not be in school. If a child is absent and no parent call is recorded, a personal phone call will be made by Blaine staff to inquire about the absence. When the student returns, he/she must bring a note signed by a parent indicating the date(s) and reason for absence. The Chicago Public Schools accepts only four reasons for excused absences: 1. illness, 2. death in the family, 3. family emergency, 4. observance of a religious holiday.

Tardiness: To maximize and respect teaching/learning time, we expect students to arrive at school on time. Students are expected to arrive at school by 7:55 a.m. when the line-up bell rings. Students who arrive after the 8:00 a.m. entry bell must obtain a tardy slip from the school office. Parents of students who are experiencing difficulty with punctuality will be contacted for a meeting with the administration so that a corrective action plan can be implemented. It is our goal this year for all students to arrive on time.

Q: What school supplies are needed for my child’s class?

A: It’s important for your child to be prepared for his or her first day of school. Parents can help by gathering the supplies their children need, to start the school year off right. Making sure your child attends classes on time every day and is well equipped with the recommended supplies will put them in the best possible position to perform well in school.

To order school supplies, please follow these simple steps:
1. Log into Yubbler at https://www.yubbler.com
2. Go to the Yub for your child’s grade level.
3. Go to the School Supplies tab.
4. Review the school supply list and hit the ‘Purchase’ button.
5. Fill in your student and payment information.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each of your students. Each grade level supply list purchase requires a separate transaction.

If You Elect To Purchase Your Own School Supplies:
· Log into the Yubbler site to get your student’s supply list at https://www.yubbler.com. The list is the same whether you purchase them from Yubbler/PTA or if you buy them on your own.
· If you are not ordering your supplies through Yubbler you must bring them to Blaine in a closed box(es) clearly labeled with:
o Student’s First and Last Name
o Grade Level
· Do NOT label individual items with your student’s name, only the box.
· The supply lists were created by your grade level teachers. Please make sure you get everything on the list so they can run a successful classroom.

Q: Where do I find out about school closings or snow days?

A: Chicago Public Schools’ Chief Executive Officer will decide whether or not schools will close based on weather conditions and forecasts.  Any decisions will be communicated to parents and students through automated telephone calls, the news media and the 311 Center.

We encourage parents, guardians and students to monitor news reports and the CPS web-site for school closing information.  The Student Safety hotline at (773) 553-3335 will be available to provide emergency information and to answer emergency concerns.

We are aware of the inconvenience that school closings may cause parents and families but the safety and security of Chicago Public Schools’ students is our top priority.

Q: How do I get updated communication from the school?

A: The Blaine PTA has been extremely helpful in setting up email communication directly from our Principal’s office to you by using Yubbler.

Q: Is there a Lost & Found at Blaine?

A: Yes, it is located in the basement hallway, across from Room B6. There is also a shelf in the main office at the bottom of the teachers’ mailboxes that contain smaller more fragile objects.  Clothing items not claimed in a reasonable time will be donated to charity.

Emergency Planning in Schools

Every Chicago Public School creates a plan that helps the school manage an emergency event. Schools update these plans on an annual basis, and your child’s school has done so this year.

Staff members are familiar with emergency plans and it is important that parents understand their role in the Chicago Public School emergency planning efforts. Three important areas in which parents can assist in emergency planning for schools are:

  1. Reinforce your child’s understanding of the ELSA emergency codes.
  2. Ensure the emergency contact information on file in the school office is up to date and accurate.
  3. Know where to find information if there is an emergency in your child’s school and understand the process which will be followed to reunite you with your child.

ELSA Emergency Codes

E   –   Evacuation   – Fire alarm is sounded or an announcement orders the school to be evacuated. Students and staff report to pre-designated exterior area around the school. When an evacuation from a school due to fire or other hazard is called, school personnel will escort students to a pre-designated area around the school. In certain situations to ensure safety, students may be moved to an alternate location which is part of the overall school emergency plan.

L   –   Lockdown –   No one moves unless otherwise announced by school administrator or emergency personnel. All exterior doors, classroom doors and windows are closed and locked until further direction.

S   –   Shelter-in-Place –   Appropriate for weather emergencies such as tornado or a threat in the neighborhood. Students and staff proceed to the pre-designated interior location.

A   –   All Clear –   Incident has resolved and the school is returning to normal operations.

Parent/Child Reunification

Following an emergency, as assessment is made to determine if the school is safe to return to normal operations. In most instances, the school will call an “ALL CLEAR” and the school day will resume. In some instances, students may need to be dismissed or a parent/guardian may wish to pick up their child. The school staff will follow an orderly plan to reunite parents/guardians with their children, particularly younger children. In certain emergency situations, the following protocols will be followed:

  1. Parents/guardians may be directed to a Parent Reunification Staging Area.
  2. Custodial parents/guardians or persons on the child’s emergency pick-up list may be asked to show identification — even if school staff are familiar with you.

Emergency Information Resources

During a Lockdown or Shelter-in-Place, police/fire will not allow anyone access to the school area. CPS will provide regular updates to the public via their main telephone line (773-553-1000), their website (www.cps.edu), and local radio and television outlets.

Telephone lines may experience heavy use during an emergency and not work because they are overloaded. If you have access to the Internet, TV or radio, please use that instead of phones to allow the school to use them to obtain any emergency help they may need.
